Child and family counseling

Are you frequently in conflict with your child?

PEAK Exceptional Services offers family counseling and therapy for children, teens, and adults in our Northglenn office. We also offer parenting consultation and support in both office locations (Denver and Northglenn). Our providers specialize in working with children and teens, particularly gifted and twice exceptional (2e) students and those who struggle with ADHD and learning disorders.

Child and family counseling offers an important resource for struggling families who are worn out by conflict and discouraged about strained relationships between parents and children. Gifted and 2e children have unique struggles that are often missed or misunderstood by teachers, healthcare providers (including mental health professionals), friends, and family. Counseling with our expert staff will help you understand the specific patterns occurring in your family and offer a detailed assessment of your unique issues. Then, together we create a plan to get your family “unstuck.”

Do you ever feel helpless as a parent, not knowing what to do about your child’s behavior?

Children need boundaries and limits to create structure, reduce anxiety, and help them practice how to exist in the real world. If you are too passive or nurturing, you may struggle to hold a line in the face of a child’s anger or disappointment in not getting their way. But if you swing too far the other direction, becoming rigid, strict, or aggressive, children can feel unheard, invalidated, and fearful.

Both extremes can damage the relationship with your children, breaking the trust and attachment needed for effective parenting. If children do not trust in your care and love, they will not trust in your limits and efforts to control their worlds.

Do you and your partner struggle to be on the same page when parenting?

Children need two very different, but equally important, aspects of parenting to grow into healthy adults: nurturing and boundaries. They are opposite sides of the same coin that require careful balance. Families often get stuck when one aspect becomes too dominant – or when the parents are in conflict about their approach to parenting.

If you are lying awake at night thinking, “Am I good parent? Are my kids okay?” then family counseling can offer solutions for you.

Other things that weaken this trust are family traumas. Divorce, addiction, parental conflict, abuse, neglect, and aggression can all affect attachment and create distrust between parents and children. Once a child does not trust their caregiver, negative behaviors are soon to follow. Defiance, anxiety, withdrawal, substance abuse, and reactivity are some symptoms that come as a result of this imbalance.

If any of these dynamics strike a chord, you are not alone.

Parenting is a daily challenge that poses problems and situations you never imagined you would face! We are here to be your partner and teammate so you don’t have to go through this journey alone. We specialize in teaching parenting skills, adjusting relationship dynamics, and supporting you in making the best decisions for your family. We can move you from the chaos of feeling helpless and anxious to a peace that comes from confidence and composure.

Don’t muddle through this alone.

We understand that coming to counseling may hold a stigma for some people. Let us reassure you that counseling is for everyone and anyone that wants to gain confidence in their parenting and help their children develop better skills for managing life.

Or perhaps you’re feeling the shame and embarrassment brought on by a society which implies that parenting is “instinctive” and therefore you’re a “bad parent” if you don’t know how to handle challenging behaviors and emotions in your child. This is simply untrue.

Maybe you think, “Well, it’s not that bad yet,” or “I’m so used to it.” Family counseling can bring children and parents to a new level of peace and happiness you never thought possible, even when things aren’t quite “that bad.” You don’t have to do this alone, and we are here to help.

Benefits of Counseling

We will work directly with your child to teach him or her better coping skills for dealing with “big” feelings and choosing healthier behaviors. We strongly believe that if children could behave better, they would. When their emotions and/or behaviors are out of control, they are telling us that they do not have the skills to deal with these feelings or situations. It is our job to teach them those skills.

There are also specific parenting skills that we will teach you and help you practice during the course of treatment. You are not born with these skills. If you did not have healthy models of parents when you yourself were growing up, you may struggle even more in your efforts to be a better parents than you had as a child. Counseling can offer insight into how your own family of origin may be affecting your current struggles.

Family counseling is completely confidential and private. We can assure a safe environment where you will not be judged or looked down upon for your struggles. In truth, we feel great fondness and respect for parents that are brave enough to face their issues head on and create change for themselves and their children. You have the power to change the course of your family for generations to come. We would love the honor of helping you do that.
